Professional Learning Microblogging Infographic | Blog Post #4

Social media can be much more than a space for entertainment and personal communication. For educators and instructional technologists, microblogging platforms can operate as informal professional learning networks where ideas, resources, research, and professional connections are exchanged quickly. This process, sometimes described as social media mining, involves intentionally searching, evaluating, organizing, and using information found through online professional communities. X was selected for this project because its search tools, hashtags, public conversations, and networked structure make it possible to locate instructional technology resources while also observing how educators and organizations interact.

Research supports the use of microblogging for professional learning. In a survey of 755 K–16 educators, Carpenter and Krutka (2014) found that professional development was one of the most common educational uses of Twitter. Participants valued the platform because it was immediate, personalized, collaborative, and capable of connecting educators beyond their local schools. Carpenter and Krutka (2015) similarly reported that educators viewed Twitter as an accessible and interactive environment for professional development. These findings suggest that social media can extend professional learning beyond scheduled workshops and institutional boundaries.

The infographic for this project presents X as a professional learning environment centered on instructional technology. The first section explains the platform and identifies useful search methods. X allows users to search by keywords and hashtags and to filter results into categories such as Top, Latest, People, Media, and Lists. Its Advanced Search can narrow results by words, phrases, accounts, and dates (X, 2026). For instructional technology, useful starting searches include #edtech, #edtechchat, instructional design, artificial intelligence in education, digital learning, learning sciences, and online teaching. Hashtags are especially useful because they organize posts around shared topics and make professional conversations easier to discover.

The infographic also shows a simplified professional network. Instead of viewing individual posts in isolation, educators can follow organizations, researchers, practitioners, resource creators, and other educators and observe how information travels among them. For example, an instructional technology search may lead to professional communities such as ISTE-related accounts, education organizations, and practitioner networks. A post may connect a research finding to a practical classroom resource through a repost, reply, quotation, or shared link. Sturm and Quaynor (2020) found that Twitter-based professional learning can support content-focused discussion, collaboration, and teacher agency. At the same time, they noted limitations: social media is not necessarily job-embedded and does not automatically provide active practice or coaching.

Because social media contains both valuable information and misinformation, professional learning requires deliberate evaluation. My recommended method is STOP–CHECK–COMPARE–SAVE. First, stop before reposting or accepting a claim. Second, check the author, organization, evidence, publication date, and purpose. Third, compare the claim with independent scholarly, professional, or primary sources. Fourth, save useful resources in a system that makes them easy to revisit. This process prevents popularity, follower counts, attractive graphics, or confident language from becoming substitutes for evidence.

A key part of the process is lateral reading. Rather than remaining on the original page and judging credibility only from its appearance, lateral readers leave the source and investigate what other reliable sources say about the author, organization, or claim. Wineburg and McGrew (2019) found that professional fact-checkers were more likely to read laterally and reached more warranted conclusions than participants who relied on traditional, within-page evaluation. For educators, this means that a post claiming that a new artificial intelligence tool improves learning should lead to additional questions: Who conducted the research? Was the study peer reviewed? What population was studied? Are there independent findings? What limitations were reported?

Effective social media mining should also be intentional rather than endless scrolling. Educators can begin with a specific professional learning question, such as “How can generative AI support formative assessment without replacing teacher judgment?” They can then identify several credible accounts, search related hashtags, compare recent and highly engaged posts, and follow links back to original research or organizational documents. Useful resources should be saved with a short note explaining why they matter. Educators should also contribute to the network by asking thoughtful questions, sharing evidence, acknowledging original creators, and reporting what they learn from trying an idea.

There are challenges to this approach. Algorithms may prioritize popularity or relevance rather than scholarly quality, and highly active communities can create echo chambers. Social media also creates distractions, privacy concerns, and information overload. Therefore, social media should supplement—not replace—formal professional development, scholarly literature, peer collaboration, and job-embedded learning. A strong professional learning routine might combine a short daily search with a weekly review of saved resources and a monthly deeper investigation of one important topic.

Ultimately, social media mining is most valuable when educators treat themselves as active participants rather than passive consumers. X can provide rapid access to diverse perspectives, emerging instructional technology discussions, and professional connections, but the educator must decide what deserves attention and trust. The infographic’s central message is therefore simple: search widely, evaluate carefully, connect intentionally, and apply thoughtfully. When these habits are combined with lateral reading and evidence-based professional judgment, microblogging can become a practical extension of an educator’s professional learning network.
